October is National Retirement Security Month. Encourage your employees to spend some time to think about their future.

Each year, Congress sponsors National Retirement Security Week as a dedicated time to focus on improving retirement outcomes. This year, National Retirement Security Week has expanded to become National Retirement Security Month (NRSM). This month, encourage your employees to think about their financial health.

Overall wellness is made up of more than just physical, mental and emotional health. Financial health and wellness plays a big part in one’s general well-being as well. With a little planning and guidance, your employees can build a more secure tomorrow by creating good habits to help improve their financial outcome for life. Encourage employees to learn more about what the CalPERS 457 Plan has to offer.

Your non-participating employees can take the first step on the journey to financial wellness by visiting With lower fees as of July 1 to participate in the Plan, it couldn’t be a better time for them to start saving for retirement.

Watch your email this month for the next CalPERS Quarterly Education Kit. This quarter’s kit will include an email and flyer that you can download and forward to your employees. The email and flyer will introduce your employees to their dedicated CalPERS 457 Account Manager, tell them a little more about him or her, and encourage them to visit to schedule an appointment. This unique benefit is available to all employees, even if they aren’t participating in the CalPERS 457 Plan. It’s the best way for your employees to review and discuss their personal retirement planning and saving strategy.

Welcome to National Retirement Security Month, and thank you for offering the CalPERS 457 Plan to your employees to help them meet their retirement savings goals.

New ACH options available for taking and paying off loans

Taking a loan?
When applying for a loan from their CalPERS 457 Plan (if your agency has adopted the Loan Provision), your employees will now have the option to receive the loan by mail or have it direct deposited via ACH if they have banking information on file for at least 7 days prior to requesting the loan. A Truth-in-Lending Disclosure Statement will also be mailed to them after issue, containing the amount financed, the finance charge, the loan’s annual percentage rate, the repayment procedure, the security interest and a copy for their records.

Paying off a loan in full?
Your employees may prepay a loan in full at any time by paying the outstanding loan balance. In addition to paying off loans with a cashier’s or certified check, employees can now pay the outstanding loan balance by reverse ACH if banking information is on file. Partial loan prepayments are not allowed.

Please refer participant questions about loans to the toll-free Plan Information Line at 800-260-0659.

Has your agency added the Roth 457 option?

Is your agency looking for a way to boost participation in the CalPERS 457 Plan? Adding the Roth 457 option to your agency’s Plan could help.

man cooking with daughterThe Roth 457 option offers you:

  • Another valuable employee benefit at no cost to your agency.
  • An attractive option to your employees, especially younger employees in lower tax brackets.

The Roth 457 option offers your employees:

  • Three choices for making contributions — using pre-tax dollars, Roth after-tax dollars, or a combination of both!
  • The flexibility to create a future tax-free source of retirement income.

Roth contributions are taxed before they are deducted from the employees’ payroll, then processed and reported in my|CalPERS. The contributions are not tax-deductible like pre-tax contributions but the advantage is that participants may be able to withdraw the money tax-free in the future as long as they meet certain distribution criteria.

To learn more about the Roth 457 Option for your agency’s CalPERS 457 Plan, call us toll free at 800-696-3907 or send us an email. When you’re ready to add the provision, complete and return the Roth Adoption Form to CalPERS. Once CalPERS approves your Roth provision request, the provision agreement will be in effect. You will be able to start submitting Roth contributions in the my|CalPERS system the following earned period from when the provision is approved. CalPERS will then help you spread the word to your employees as soon as the provision is activated. We invite you to explore the advantage of the Roth 457 option for your employees.
